WORKSHOPS

WORKSHOP #1:
STAGE COMBAT TECHNIQUES

Workshop Leader: Dan Choszczyk (Bio below)

Class time: Monday May 16th -- 9:30 a.m. sharp - 11:45 p.m.
(latecomers will observe only)

Requirements: Wear loose fitting clothing, NO JEANS, or JEWELLERY.
Sweats, or shorts are fine.

This workshop is designed to give a general understanding of the safety and techniques of Stage Combat. Through terminology and hands on activity the student will learn the ILLUSION of violence. Safety is priority one.

Unarmed combat includes:
Strikes - slaps and punches to face, punch to stomach
Knaps - sound effects for slaps and punches
Chokes - front and back
Blocks and Breakaways
Falling - front, side and backwards.

Armed Combat:
Techniques using prop knives, clubs, or sticks for armed combat will be explored time permitting. Sword demo may be presented time permitting.

WORKSHOP #2:
Le Jeu: Pleasure to Play with Complicite

Workshop Leader: Anna Gartshore (Bio below)

Class time: Monday May 16th -- noon - 2 p.m.

Requirements: Wear comfortable clothing for movement -- sweats are great.

This workshop will help to develop a more precise creative process through improvisation and encourage ensemble building. Using the principles of Le Jeu (playfulness) we will explore how the game can open the gates to performance with pleasure and complicite (togetherness) - two of the elements most needed for theatre that resists the cliché.

Introducing our instructors!!

Dan Choszczyk resides in Champion, MI. USA with his wife Deborah.
He has been teaching the martial arts for over 30 years. He has been trained in the Japanese katana, Okinawan weaponry, nunchuka, Tonfa, bo-staff, western fencing and all sword forms.

Dan taught a self defense system that he designed for law enforcement at LSSU that included weapon disarming and control techniques based on five styles of Martial Arts. He also taught martial arts classes for 6 years at Shattuck-St. Marys, a private boarding school in Faribault, MN. Being an accomplished blade-smith, Dan also is able to create fully functional modern and period weapons.

His most recent theatre credits for staging and choreographing fight scenes include:

Man of La Mancha
Romeo and Juliet - the original and modern version
Macbeth
The Complete Works of Shakespeare
Moon Over Buffalo
West Side Story

Anna Gartshore is a graduate of the full-time program at Ecole Philippe Gaulier International School of Theatre in London UK and Paris France.
